Duwili Ella & Dumbara Ella Expedition

The Knuckles Mountain Range is an incredible place to explore while in Sri Lanka. It offers the chance to witness an abundance of wildlife and unlimited opportunities to experience real adventure.

The Range consists of 34 mountains which range from 900 to 2,000 metres in elevation. The surrounding flora and fauna consists of grasslands, tropical montane evergreen forests, cloud forests and an astonishing array of animals.

While there are around 34 different hiking trails throughout the Knuckles Mountain Range, today let us explore the hiking trail to Duwili Ella which is a 16-kilometer hike and is one of the most difficult and challenging hikes available. It is important to be well prepared for this hike, to be able to face any adverse situations. This hike is very challenging and cannot be completed without a high level of fitness. This should not dissuade you from attempting a hike in the Knuckles Mountain Range. The Duwili Ella trek is considered the pinnacle of all the hiking trails in the Knuckles Range. It is a 40-metre waterfall hidden deep within the jungle. The most defining feature of Duwili Ella is the cave behind the waterfall, where we will have our overnight camping experience.

The trail is famous for its steep ascents, narrow paths, and astounding views. The Knuckles Mountain Range has been declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, due to its massive and diverse wilderness area. You will also witness more sites of interest such as the Walpolamulla Village - The smallest Village in Sri Lanka, Kaludiyapokuna Waterfall, Dumbara Waterfall, Infinity pool, Sansun Waterfall in addition to other streams, lakes, waterfalls, birds, misty mountains, and even elephants.
