Knuckles mountain range is a part of Hill Country (Central) Sri Lanka in district of Matale and Kandy which is also above 3000Ft or 915 meters from sea level and covers an area of about 90 sq. Miles or 234 sq.KM of land extent. This mountain range is called as Knuckles is because when it’s seen from Kandy the mountain range looks like the knuckles of a clenched fist. The Sri Lankan ancient name for this mountain is “Dumbara Mitiyawatha” which means “The Misty Valley”. Giving this mountain an extra speciality, it was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010. All the routes to Knuckles are covered in thick forests and large number of prime scenic sceneries giving the justice to self-preserve itself. This mountain range is a scenic Paradise for the hikers which will make unforgettable beautiful memories as well as giving a wonderful adventurous experience.
Three days trekking through the thick jungle of Knuckles is a massive experience for the hikers. On the way to Walpolamulla village hikers will get the opportunity to see the Manigala mountain top. Trekking through the forest, hikers will get to experience various kind of treks and landscapes such as flat areas which is easy to walk and climbing areas. Hikers will have to be cautious since there are wild elephants that they might come across. Villager’s advice hikers to be cautious from the lone elephant call “Thaniya” the English definition for “Lone” or “One”. Giving the hikers another level of experience they will get the opportunity to spend the night in an abundant village called Walpolamulla where they can camp the night.
Spending the first night in an abundant village and hikers can spend their second night on the bank of Duwili Ella (Duwili Falls). Trekking up the mountain about 7km hikers will come across a beautiful waterfall called Duwili Ella. The trail is descending up to the river and there are places which is heavily steep making the hiker more adventurous. With the heavy steeps and climbs you can achieve the target within about 5 hours. Spending the second night near Duwili Ella there’s cave like place where the hikers can spend the night with natural protection from the rain or other animals.
Trekking down the mountain is another massive adventure and a marvellous experience since the hikers sometimes can enjoy the 360 degree view of mountain ranges where they are in the middle point of the mountain range. With plenty of water streams and breathtaking views of the nature hikers can enjoy the hike without any doubt.
